Historically a men’s game – Rugby has been followed and loved by women all over the world. The inclusion of the girls teams in the IPT tournament is a very exciting development in creating opportunities for these young girls wanting to play the game.
The first ever test match for women was played in 1982, however, South Africa’s ladies played their first test match in 2004. Nearly 20 years on and the girls sides still lag behind in support. The only way to grow ladies’ rugby is to grow the inclusion of girls from grass roots level. Many of the rugby clubs are starting to encourage girls’ participation, which is fantastic to see.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union have entered two junior girls rugby teams into this years IPT tournament, with most of these girls coming from underprivileged backgrounds. Getting children to these tournaments and getting them kited out is not a cheap exercise.
Lekker Braai Lappies Boots Campaign.
During the Rugby World cup, Sani-touch decided to launch a limited-edition Green and Gold Braai canister with the aim of donating a percentage of the proceeds of the sales to the IPT Girls teams. With the ultimate goal to empower these kids to play with confidence and comfort, allowing them to reach their full potential on the field.
Hot 102.7 and Hot cares, on hearing about this initiative immediately jumped on board to assist with sponsorship. Which resulted in 46 girls being given a brand-new pair of Rugby boots on Saturday at the capping ceremony at Ellis Park.
Even having made the IPT sides, for most of these girls this was the first pair of rugby boots that they have owned.
There are currently 4 Golden Lions girls in the Junior Springbok squad for 2023. By making a small difference in the lives of these young rugby players, we hope to see many more Junior Golden Lions girls in the Future Springbok squads.
We wish all Golden Lions Teams the best of luck with the IPT tournament this week.
